The idea of the desert has long captured Western imagination, put on display in films and literature, but these portrayals often fail to capture the true scope and diversity of the people living there. Covering a quarter of the earth’s land mass and providing a home to half a billion people, they are both a physical reality and landscapes of the mind. They are lands of desolation, but also of romance, of blistering Mojave heat and biting Gobi cold. Here is a quick description and cover image of book The Desert: Lands of Lost Borders written by Michael Welland which was published in February 1, 2015. Brief Summary of Book: The Desert: Lands of Lost Borders by Michael Welland I tore through that one and gave that book the highest rating of the three. Although I didn’t enjoy the final book, the first two of the series were very good. Not having a linear story hadn’t affected my reading in first two books, but this time it was part of the challenge I had in connecting to the story. I wanted to feel as though I had been there on an alien planet with Dr. I was also let down with the details provided about Esat Ekt, the planet where the Ekt are from. I couldn’t stand Katherine Lebedev and thought Vincent’s daughter Eva was a whiny brat. I felt like this book didn’t have any redeeming characters and it felt like old characters were brought back unnecessarily. Oh man, I am so bummed to say that I was disappointed with the final installment in the Themis Files Trilogy. Amaryllis in Blueberry is her first “grown up” novel, although I think this is a “crossover” book, one that would appeal to the “young adult” market as well as to the “adult” market. You may not know Meldrum’s work because her first novel, Madapple, was pegged for the YA (young adult) market, where it received immediate and widespread critical and commercial success, landing as a finalist on more than one prize shortlist. In fact, the publisher, Simon & Schuster, realizing the appeal Amaryllis in Blueberry would have for book clubs, produced a paperback in order to make it more affordable, and completely skipped the hardcover stage. This intriguing novel is the ideal choice for a book club it’s a compelling read, the writing is beautiful, and there is a lot to discuss. Should your book club read Amaryllis in Blueberry by Christina Meldrum? A resounding “yes!” is the answer. Eventually, he befriends an Aborigine boy named Neji, who is on a journey into manhood.
